War For Cybertron packs in a wealth of Transformers that fans of the series will fondly remember including Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Ironhide and Jazz. For diehard fans of the animated series, developer High Moon Studios has a real treat in store: Peter Cullen, the actor who voiced Prime in the original cartoons and blockbuster movies, returns once more to lend his vocal talents to the Autobot leader.
Other Autobots that make an appearance include Air Raid, Grimlock, Jetfire, Ratchet and Sideswipe. Suffice to say, every Transformers fan will be massively pleased with the roster of characters on display. On the Decepticon front no Transformers game would be complete without the addition of Megatron, leader of the opposition. Here, Megatron is backed up by a vast army of Decepticons including Barricade, Brawl, Shockwave, Soundwave and Starscream.
Alongside these fan pleasers, you'll also get to meet and fight beside a whole host of other familiar faces from both the comics and the classic TV series.
Transformers hounds take note. At the outset of the game you're given the opportunity to play as either an Autobot or a Decepticon. If you want to experience the story in chronological order as intended by the developers, select Decepticon first. Here, you'll blast your way through Megatron's story controlling an army of Decepticons on a mission to locate and use the Dark Energon found on the planet Cybertron. Once completed, you can then switch to Optimus' campaign and try and save your ravaged planet from total destruction.
The game is fast paced from start to finish, pitting you against waves of increasingly tougher enemies as you smash through each of the missions collecting power-ups such as powerful new weaponry including rocket launchers, shotguns, mini-guns and sniper rifles. When each weapon is collected from a crate of a downed opponent, your Autobot or Decepticon will integrate it into its mechanical body via a slick animation.
As you progress through each level you'll be tasked with holding off swarms of incoming attacks, locating switches, opening doors and eventually coming face to face with a range of increasingly tough bosses. These bosses all have their own unique weaknesses which can be exploited using certain weapons. Developer High Moon doesn't hold back on the amount of firepower available to you in each of the huge environments it has constructed, so be sure to explore every corner whenever you have the opportunity. You never know what you might find!
Transformers: War For Cybertron features three player online co-operative mode, which means you and your friends can team up to play through the entire story mode as either the Autobots or the Decepticons. It's incredibly fast paced and you'll have to keep an eye on your teammates at all times because if they fall in battle it's up to you to revive them. The fun doesn't stop there though; once you have wrapped up both campaign modes, you can then take the fight online and compete in frantic 10 player skirmishes.
War For Cybertron includes a number of online modes including Team Deathmatch and Conquest. At the outset of a match you can choose from up to four different classes including Scout, Scientist, Leader and Soldier, with each one kitted out with their very own set of abilities. Scouts have a cloaking device and low health, whereas a Scientist can heal comrades and transform into a jet. Soldiers can activate a shield to protect teammates as well as drop ammo supplies, while Leaders have the ability to enhance everybody's powers and abilities for a short time.
Lastly, you have Escalation mode where the goal is to stay alive for as long as possible while fighting off swarms of increasingly tougher enemies. Any points you gain from defeating enemies you can then spend on health, ammo, upgrades and unlocking new arenas.
