The A team
Gameplay is in the form of a tactical first person shooter. Before each mission you are given the choice of which comrades you would like to take into battle with you, each of whom has a specific skill that you can utilise. For example, Marksmen are crack shots with a sniper rifle, Anti Tank Gunners come equipped with a rocket launcher to take down large enemy vehicles and Medics can heal downed team mates in the heat of battle. You can control these team mates through the use of the R2 and directional buttons, and they can be switched between Recon mode, where they will utilise stealth and refrain from firing, and Assault where they will go all out to take down the enemy. The artificial intelligence is extremely good, and squad members will call out audible instructions to each other that refer to objects in the environment, all of which deepens the feeling of being in charge of a real squad of soldiers.
Being the Ghost Recon team, you and your comrades have access to the most advanced military technology available. When separated from your team you are able to see through their eyes thanks to helmet-mounted cameras, meaning you can split off from your team and still give effective orders depending on their position. You also have access to advanced targeting systems, vehicular support and most importantly, guns. Your main weapon is a prototype MR-C, or Modular Caseless Rifle, a super-high tech, practically theoretical weapon that can fire 900 rounds per minute, but you have access to a range of other cutting-edge weapons including the AS50, a sniper rifle with an effective range of 2000 yards as well as smoke grenades to provide cover and C4 explosives for taking out vehicles and military installations.
Ghost in the machine
There are four difficulty settings ranging from Low Risk, where the game provides helpful assistance and you can absorb a high amount of damage before dying, to Original Ghost Recon mode where a single bullet will be enough to take you down. In this way the game is accessible to everyone, from the hardcore Ghost Recon fans to newcomers who may not have played a first person shooter before.
New for PlayStation 3 is the addition of online multiplayer modes. You can choose from four character classes - Rifleman, Grenadier, Automatic Rifleman and Marksman, each of which has proficiency in different weapons. There's also a collection of neat features to make the experience more realistic, like team mates being downed without being killed, and healed in the middle of the battle to deny the opposition team a point. With fantastic graphics and sound, a compelling, gripping storyline and some of the best tactical action around, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is one of the most involving first person shooters available on PlayStation 3. Add to this a multiplayer mode that's sure to keep fans battling each other online for years to come and you have a must-buy for PS3 owners, first person shooter fan or not.
